Well i have tried out things like this on lakes and rivers and have found them to be very in accurate. Less you are willing to pay top wake for a proper fishing and depth finder then you will get the same feed back as what i did.
I found when the fish finder was going over dense weed or through schools of small fish, on the screen what flag up shallow depths for dense weed or couple big fish for schools of say roach.
There is obviously benifits of using this when its clear ish water u can gage depth and bottom clarity and things.
But in a hard lake with weed beds and large silt area's and things your gonna get bad readings.
What i would say is get a nice Marker Rod Set-up, practise on a place you know well and whats out there so you know what your feeling for. Obviously from experiance you get better. Slow soft drags and no bumps normaly indicates sandy area's, lots of bumps on rod tip obviously gravel you will get to know the density of gravel or if its stones rather then gravel, Silt is hard to explain normaly gets clogged up rod will bend then flick back.(silt you have to be careful drag it slowly cause when you unplug the lead it will fly over alot of feature)
Im rambling now, all i can say is there is pro's and con's for a fish finder. I would strongly recommend just buying a nice marker rod setup.... (PS Dont use it at stonar lol)

as above, save ur money and stick with a marker set up,
spend abit of time getting used to your marker set up and your get better readings then you ever could with a fish finder!
